1 Thess. 5:14 “And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.”

Recently, the Youth Group had an opportunity to help out with a VBS program hosted in Hamburg, PA. The elaborate games and rides along with the workshops and dramatic presentations took weeks of preparation, planning and hard labor. The VBS was quite an event for the small community and Zion Church, but the hard work resulted in about 400 children and parents attended the week-long event. Over 60 of those students decided to say a prayer asking Jesus into their hearts. It was a great outreach and we were very blessed to help, even if it was just a bit.

Our main task for being there was to assist with the clean up and tear down of the VBS. And though it had taken weeks and possibly months of various people working to set up the amazing VBS. It took a group of about 15 to just about tear everything down. And it made me wonder how sometimes it’s so much easier to tear things down than it is to build things up. This is true for many things in life and can be true in a church community far too often. One careless act or word or misunderstanding can seriously hurt the well-being of a community.

Our words and attitudes towards one another can either act as brick and mortar or wrecking balls. As the Proverbs remind us, “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” And, “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” So the question is, which person are you? Are you the mortar helping St. Paul’s to grow closer, outward and upward? I believe that God wants to use all of us to build each other up and grow this church. And one of the best ways we can do this is by looking to build up and encourage one another. I hope that you will find the way that God most wants to use you to encourage His church.
