“By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.”   Hebrews 11.8

Something stirred inside of me last year when I was listening to Pastor John preach a sermon on this verse during a series on Hebrews 11. For the next few months, Erin and I could not shake the sense that God was doing something new, but we were not sure what, where, or when it would be. It opened up a season of praying specifically for God to reveal further what He was beginning to set in our hearts.

A few months later, Erin and I received a phone call from Christy and Ed Hanna, two of our friends who are missionaries with Cru (the U.S. ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ). They said that they were called to start a new chapter of this college ministry in the Lehigh

Valley of Pennsylvania and wanted to know if we would like to join their team. We thought, “Could this be what the Lord has been stirring up our hearts to respond to?” “Could this be the new direction that He is leading us?” We continued to pray, consider, and seek counsel from others as we wrestled with these questions.

As time went on, we sensed that the Lord was confirming this step with Cru in a number of ways — a provision of housing in the Lehigh Valley, a new church pastor in the area (whom we personally know) that had been praying for a close relationship between their ministry and Cru, and finding strong encouragement in personal time with the Lord and with friends.

Erin had been praying for God to speak and confirm this decision with both of us together. She also began asking the Lord if the time to go is now, because if the time is next year, or some other time, there may be another open door that God would want us to walk through. If the time was now, however, there is only one option and one door made available to us.

In late June, on a car ride home from Lancaster, PA, exhausted from talking so much about whether we feel like the Lord is calling us join staff with Cru, I suggested we take a break and put the radio on for a while. We prayed for wisdom, we prayed that God would make it clear, and we asked for God to reveal if the time was now. When Erin turned the radio on, here was the chorus of the song that we heard next:

Child the time has come for you to go
You will never be alone
Every dream that you have been shown
Will be like living stone
Building you into a home
A shelter from the storm

We believe in a God who speaks and makes His will known to His people! We called Christy and Ed the next morning and said “yes” to their offer to join their team. That next Sunday, Pastor John preached a sermon on Rebekah, who said “I will go” when faced with a God-given opportunity into the future. St. Paul’s closed that service singing “I’ll go where You want me to go, dear Lord, I’ll be what You want me to be.”

As we share with others what God is doing, we find that many people are encouraged and inspired to explore what God may be calling them to! May you too put your trust in Jesus Christ, who loves you, gave Himself for you, and speaks to lead you in the paths that you should take in life! May you hear His voice, and like Abraham, follow Him wherever He leads.

If you would like to hear more about Cru or you can support this ministry to win college students to Christ in the Lehigh Valley, we would love to share more with you! Please email me at
